South Carolina Ports Authority saw a strong start to fiscal year 2020, recording its busiest July in Port history at container terminals and inland ports.

The South Carolina Ports Authority owns and operates public seaport facilities in Charleston and Georgetown, as well as Inland Ports in Greer, South Carolina and Dillon, South Carolina. Created by the South Carolina General Assembly in the early 1940’s, it is authorized and charged with promoting, developing, constructing, equipping, maintaining and operating the harbors and seaports within the State of South Carolina.

South Carolina Ports:
– Port of Charleston

The South Carolina Ports Authority owns and operates five public marine terminals in the Port of Charleston. These facilities handle both containerized and non-containerized cargo, as well as cruise passengers. Port of Georgetown.

– Inland Port Greer

Opened November 2013, the South Carolina Inland Port in Greer, SC extended the reach of the port more than 200 miles into the state’s interior.

– Inland Port Dillon

Located within the Carolinas I-95 Mega Site, Inland Port Dillon has close proximity to I-95, a critical transportation artery in the Southeast. The area is central to a significant base of existing Port users that represent base cargo opportunities for the facility.

TWIC In South Carolina

TWIC was established by Congress in the Maritime Transportation Security Act and the Security and Accountability for Every Port Act to serve as an identification program for all Coast Guard credentialed mariners and personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas within a port.

The possession of a TWIC is required for individuals who need routine access to restricted areas in the course of their employment and due to the nature of their employment where TWIC escorting is not feasible. Persons seeking access to SCPA facilities who do not physically possess a TWIC; are not routinely employed on SCPA facilities; have demonstrated a business need to enter; and are approved by the SCPA to enter, may only enter SCPA facilities with an SCPA approved TWIC escort as a side-by-side companion at the ratios required by federal regulations. The approved TWIC escort must be arranged in advance of arrival at facilities.

Process for Obtaining a TWIC:

The current processing time for a TWIC card is roughly 60-90 days. It is important for anyone who needs the credential to enroll as soon as possible. Pre-enrollment speeds up the process by allowing workers to provide biographic information and to schedule a time to complete the application process in person, eliminating waiting at enrollment centers. Pre-enroll online at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.
